Jivamukti Yoga with Sharon Gannon and David Life
SHARON GANNON & DAVID LIFE
These artists and spiritual gurus have spent almost twenty years of their lives in service to yogic principles and have introduced tens of thousands of people around the world to the spiritual benefits of Jivamukti Yoga through their New York City yoga centers and workshop tour around the globe. They are often credited with redefining yoga in the west and for making yoga as popular as it is today. They are considered to be "teacher's teachers" and their extensive teacher-training program has been a catalyst for some of the most renowned yoga teachers and centers around the country. By applying the ancient knowledge contained in the yogic scriptures to modern life they have made it hip to be spiritual. Their New York City yoga center, one of the largest in the country, has grown to be the most popular as well. Although they were raised in different parts of the country, both Gannon and Life began their social activism while they were high school students in the 60's. After school, both went on to become renown performing and fine artists of the legendary New York Lower East Side creative scene where they met and became partners in business and life. They went on to use yoga as another way to frame the questions they had been asking through their art. With their groundbreaking development of Jivamukti Yoga they have successfully synthesized the usually taboo combination of Art, Politics and Spirituality. While most activism is directed at an overthrow of the established government, Gannon and Life's philosophy has taken a much more radical turn - an attempt to overthrow of the tyranny of thoughts inside our own minds. In 1999, along with Janet Rienstra, they founded the Animal Mukti Free Spay & Neuter Clinic at the Humane Society of NY and every July 4th they hold an annual fundraiser to support it. Together they co-direct the two Jivamukti Yoga Centers in New York City and have authored two books, Jivamukti Yoga: Practices for Liberating Body & Soul and The Art of Yoga. Their goal
is to deliver yoga to as many people as possible through Jivamukti Yoga.
Leaders from the fields of art and business look to them for spiritual
teachings and guidance and they are a constant inspiration for all yoga
sadahkas (seekers of the truth). They acknowledge the generous gifts
they have received from their gurus, Sri Brahmananda Sarasvati, Swami
Nirmalanada and Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Read an article about Sharon in the yoga magazine Ascent.
