Core Purpose with KT Shores ![]() Saturday, Feb. 25th, 2-4pm, $30 if registered on or before Feb. 25th, $35 after. What is the core? More than just the abdominal region of the body, it is our center of balance and strength, and is linked to emotional and spiritual elements of ourlives. In the realm of asana, a strong core improves every posture, lending a sense of balance and ease. But weakness in the core can contribute to misuse and pain in the spine and sacroiliac joint, degenerative disk disease and arthritis. Limp abdominals may also hint at a lack of digestive fire, constipation, and inefficient absorption of nutrients that can cause chronic exhaustion, a muddied mind and gloomy moods. The belly is also central to healing emotionally bound problems like eating disorders, and core work can bring up and help us process difficult food-related feelings. We'll take a look at the anatomy of the core, and approach healthy strengthening through pranayam (breath work) and kriya (exercises) designed to stimulate digestion. Sequences built to awaken and tone our center support movement through surya namaskar (sun salutations), and we'll explore how to access, strengthen, and move from our core in other standing postures, inversions, and heart openers. The practice will conclude with a guided meditation on manipura (solar plexus chakra), which is linked with our physical and spiritual digestion. A strong core makes us more resilient, can help free ourselves from common injuries and cultivates intelligence and strength beyond the mat. Wherever you want to go, you can only get there through the very core of your being - Jai! All levels welcome. A yogini, dancer, martial artist and mom, KT Shores explores embodiment and awareness with an eye towards compassion and scientific exploration. KT teaches yoga here in Seattle and is the artistic director of Peripeteia, a perfomance arts group. For more info on KT go to www.ktshores.com Core Purpose
