"Surya Namaskar" or the salute to the sun is a flowing series of linked asanas designed to warm up the entire body and establish the integration of body, mind and breath. Traditionally done at dawn facing towards the rising sun, it can serve to prepare the body for an extended asana, pranayama or meditation practice. Combined with clear intention, concentration and/or devotion the "fire" or heat (tapas) generated may burn off the impurities and remove blockages in the nadis (the subtle energy channels) and allow the circulation of prana (the vital life force). Through this deep clearing process one has the possibility of realizing ones' true self (Atman) or uniting with the spiritual source of one's being, God or Divine Love. There are many styles of the sun salutation just as there are many styles of yoga. Classes at Samadhi often use modifications to this common sun salutation, however you will find this is an excellent place to start. It will get you into the "flow" of vinyasa style yoga. |
